i sing of the things that are true
of all desire that finds a home, through the wilds of doubt
starlight guide the path the traveler knows
for a dream may forget the hypothesis of gravity
the soul in darkness receive its wings
to discover how a single candle can burn with intent
flight touch down upon a solemn hope

Keepin’ On
OK, I’m thinking that I’m in a good place right now. I have some concepts down that are helping to bridge the gap between theory and implementation: the generalized solution is beginning to emerge out of the chaos. In other news, the old day job (QAing the Team Beach Body website) has been bothering me of late. A couple days here, a couple days there... oh well. It’s not that big a deal, I guess, just a little irritating to the whole rhythm. In still other news, I got the brother hooked on GeoDefense Swarm, and it looks like it will be the Yanks and Phils in the world series — I can’t lose. So that’s what’s going on, here in the badlands of Manhattan.

Quote
We shall never learn to know ourselves except by endeavoring to know God, for, beholding His greatness, we realize our own littleness; His purity shows us our foulness; and by meditating upon His humility we find how very far we are from being humble.

Waking Life
Last Tuesday I stayed up till 4am (having gone back to 24 hour days) getting one more thing ready for the demo I was going to present on Wednesday. Someone a friend said had connections to money. Well, that didn’t go quite as planned. It seems that my friend had overhyped both sides to both sides, and I was expecting someone younger and more tech savvy, while he I think was expecting more of a finished product. He stopped my demo before it got to anything good, actually. Woke up kinda down the next day, then I realized something. Things happen for a reason. This little setback made me realize something that I almost lost: that I’m not in it for the money, I’m following a dream. I felt better immediately upon this realization.

I was working after that on generalization. Now that I’ve got something to show, I want to make it what I’ve always thought it should be. Not so much of a hack. Was going fine up until waking up on Tuesday, feeling nauseous for the second day in a row, then sneezing. Yep, another cold. Will I never be away from the cold medicine for more than a couple months at a time? Tuesday I really wanted to work, but found that I had trouble holding any kind of productive thought in my head. So I spent the day playing GeoDefense Swarm, an iPhone game that I’m totally hooked on. Haven’t been this addicted to a video game in I don’t know how long. It’s a beautiful thing, though, when you have the playing field set up just right and watch the aliens get destroyed wave after wave. Zap.

What else? All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. I’m going a little stir crazy. The last place I’ve been other than NYC or Philly was Korea, almost a year ago, with my parents. I seriously need to take a trip somewhere. I kinda miss the hassle of going to the airport and shuffling through airport security. San Francisco might be a good destination, or Korea, again, I guess. Those are the only two places where I know anybody. Or I could throw caution to the wind and jet off to New Zealand, and look for Eun Hye. Not sure how she’d react if I actually did find her. But I like to toss that idea around in my head, just for fun. Maybe not till early next year, though. After I get a generalized solution working, and after the visits on Thanksgiving and Christmas with the parents. But one can dream.

In which my waking life is stranger, sometimes.

Quote
Two thousand years of failure have not taught some reformers that you can't stop sin by declaring it illegal. Two thousand years have not taught them that you can't save a man's soul by force — you can only lose your own in the attempt. Drunkenness and gambling and secularism and lechery — various hopeful churchmen have earnestly tried to outlaw them all; and what is the result? A drunken nation, a gambling nation, a secularist nation, an adulterous nation. And, often, a ruined Church.

So Far, So Good
Showed the current AI to my friends Chris & Micky, Chris being the CEO of the company which was my day job for several months this year. They said that it showed a lot of potential, and that cheered me up that day, in which I must have woken on the wrong side of the bed. I think I’m almost ready for prime time. I’m meeting with someone that my friend Michael knows, who is connected to money in some way. Though this I think is more about being interested in my ideas and giving me advice. There is one more, “killer” feature I want to add to the thing before I think it will be good to go, as far as wowing them in some fashion. In the last update, it took more effort to come up with the idea than the actual implementation, which took all of 4 hours. Hopefully more like that is to happen. And so it goes.

the luxury of fiction
the words have lost the luxury of fiction
have become hard to justify
they slip off the page into darkness
darkness that does not sleep
the echo is muffled by all the distances
nothing to report but silence
the dream of which, too smooth to grasp
bled into the morning coffee
and time, too high to understand
beginning again at every blink
is spelling death in the corner of the eye

The Theory
It goes to 11.

  1. Everything is information.

  2. Information is a change in potential.

  3. Also stated, meaning is a change in state.

  4. State changes by transformation, which may be a specification.

  5. Potential is the result of previous transformation, all meaning is necessarily incomplete.

  6. All meaning needs be in relation to a measure, which is the meaning’s meaning.

  7. This forms a pattern, or closure.

  8. A pattern is satisfied by another if one means the other, in relation to a measure.

  9. As per state change, there may be a method of satisfaction, which would be a transformation, and can itself be a pattern.

  10. A pattern satisfies what the satisfied pattern satisfies, given the method, if any.

  11. The satisfaction of a pattern is also a pattern.
That’s all, folks.

Quote
A man's physical hunger does not prove that that man will get any bread; he may die of starvation on a raft in the Atlantic. But surely a man's hunger does prove that he comes of a race which repairs its body by eating, and inhabits a world where eatable substances exist. In the same way, though I do not believe (I wish I did) that my desire for Paradise proves that I shall enjoy it, I think it a pretty good indication that such a thing exists and that some men will. A man may love a women and not win her; but it would be very odd if the phenomenon called "falling in love" occurred in a sexless world.
