lost
we have lost in our desiderata the meanings
to all the words
volumes of vapid scribblings drowning the
streets in punctuation
(we are smaller than we posit, and require
the protection of angels
we notice never the grand thralls in the
name of our existence
only the peeks of affect light through,
confused with our reasons)
brushing against the hollow of death, there,
beneath each surface
we imagine that we have a sense of what life
has become to us
not to believe we know not what we say
when we explain our world
(time forever a mystery, we seek to portion
it out to our own selves
though even the moments we do not
swallow will fatten us up
tender our meat to the sharp shadow,
slanting at the end of all)
further into a dream we must travel to
understand what is here
some not to return, lost in the magic, eyes
drowned in the meaning

I see light peeking through the cracks as I chip away at the grand surface; it goes well, my work. I am currently reworking my main function for the reasoner part of Mind 2.0, and I currently have very few lines of code but many lines of comments. And my current schedule: I didn’t get much sleep Thursday night nor Friday night, but ended up pretty much sleeping through Sunday. Thus it goes. I saw Indiana Jones because my roommate wanted to, and it was entertaining. I guess not much more news than that, haven’t yet spoken to Eun Hye in NZ. But yeah, life is pretty OK.

Quote
God is always present, always available. At whatever moment in which one turns to him the prayer is received, is heard, is authenticated, for it is God who gives our prayer its value and its character, not our interior dispositions, not our fervor, not our lucidity. The prayer which is pronounced for God and accepted by him becomes, by that very fact, a true prayer.

I have code that compiles, no small feat; but it as yet does not fully run. Progress it is, however. I now seek to mix the theory with the fact. I feel I am on the outer reaches of a grand mystery about to unfold, the result from the smithing of the hard hammer of cognition striking the molten steel idea, and the sharpness being finally forged. (I promise not to draw that metaphor out any further than that.) I have been at something like this position before, but this time, I have tested the waters that are there — I have actually written code, I mean. It has all been leading up to this, I feel like. The grand epiphany. Wish me bon chance.
In other news, Eun Hye emailed me last week. It seems that she is having a kind of hard time in kiwi land, and that getting the papers she needs to stay there is taking longer than she expected it would. It was nice to hear from her. Hopefully, better contact with her is forthcoming. We shall see. As I wrote before, I’m not worried. We always seem to get back together again, whatever the world may throw at us. The only concern is by my parents, who want me to get married and for the wife to pop out puppies before they kick the bucket. Other than that, I’m pretty chilled on the whole matter. Let us see what tomorrow brings.
Now for something completely different.... I find I sometimes surprise myself when I realize about all that philosophy in the movies I’ve seen — I’ve really been paying attention! And comic book morals, that I truly believe that with great power comes great responsibility, that above all things, I always want to be one of the good guys. The way I think, though, the reasons for the things I do: if I search for why, and I have at times, it is from the art that has shaped me; if one can call art some of the flicks and such that I have digested. Yes, books have their place, too, but movies are more easily digestible, more examples already played out for us to more easily follow. And I wonder what future is shaping for those who are growing up now. Anyway, just some cogs turning here....
In which I keep my feet on the ground, and reach for the stars.

Quote
I suppose that every age has its own particular fantasy: ours is science. A seventeenth-century man like Blaise Pascal, who thought himself a mathematician and scientist of genius, found it quite ridiculous that anyone should suppose that rational processes could lead to any ultimate conclusions about life, but easily accepted the authority of the Scriptures. With us, it is the other way `round.

Continuance
I saw on a site somewhere with some very silly comments, one that said “+1 to everybody”. It cracked me up, and just made me want to echo that sentiment to all the people in the world. Yeah, baby. Work is going pretty well, though I have not (I don’t think) come up with the fundamental structures of a revolution yet. But I am surely at it, hacking away. Let myself relax most of this last weekend, downloaded some games I haven’t played yet, did play some mahjong. Thus it progresses. In other news, not hide nor hair of Eun Hye; wonder how she may be doing. But in general, keeping the faith. Cheers.

Let me pray
as if I have done
unimaginable wrongs,
and have been
forgiven them all.
Let me pray

for me to speak
the words.
Let me pray
as if I could have
anything I wanted,
if only in my heart
I understood
what they truly meant.

I seek my version of Maxwell’s equations on electromagnetism. I won’t even go as far as thinking I can get my version of the equations of General Relativity. Maybe Special. We won’t even get into Newton. Perhaps the more analogous thing to what I seek are the original functions that define the language Lisp, which I use. I have them hanging up on my wall, actually, written in the form of M-expressions (instead of the S-expressions that Lisp currently uses). And now, I work with the code to see if magic might come from my fingertips. That some fundamental sets of universal scribbling will make sense in a larger part of these things of the world. One might hope. One might hope such great things.
In other news, I haven’t heard from Eun Hye apart from two messages she left. She doesn’t say anything in either, but the username in Skype says it was her, and the one left on my phone was just as strange, just some background TV. Oh, well. Maybe we’ll have the fortune of connecting again soon. I think she’s still in New Zealand, because I think if she were in Korea again, that she would tell me that she had her old phone number back and to call her. I hope she’s doing OK. In the final analysis, I’m really not that worried about things here. There was that time right after Rome where she didn’t contact me for a month, and that ended fine. I have a supreme sense that we are meant to be, and that’s all there is to it. Hi ho.
I’ve more than broken even with my investing. Last year, I got into Starbucks (SBUX), buying a bunch of shares, but I was little informed on the matter, just guessing, and guessing badly. I got out of it late last year, and got into Apple (AAPL). I have had several chances to get into Apple, and I finally decided that this time was not going to pass me by. And finally, when AAPL finally hit over 183, I made back all the money I lost on buying SBUX. Hoorah. I sold about 2/5 of it, therefore, at just a little more than 184, so I’ve actually made a little money. And it went up again the day after, so I made a little more. I’d really rather like to keep money in it, but we’ll see about how finances go. Might have to live on it. And so it goes.
In which I fear no fire.

bare metal
i have hit the bare metal of existence
the raw taste of iron upon the teeth
the brunt of fate shouldering me on
splayed me out upon the outer wires
and i am naked against the night sky
breathlessly breathing the inky dark
exhaling half my soul, in which i swim
stretched out of my mind and frozen
cracked open to expose the emptiness
the metal groaning in pains of birth
a new eye perfectly mirroring stillness
